Who Invented Jelly Beans?

No one really knows who first invented the jelly bean really. Before jelly beans there were other jelly sweets but the oldest one we know is Turkish Delight.

Turkish Delight is believed to be the oldest know sweet recipe and it had remained unchanged for years. Turkish Delight is made by boiling sugar until it becomes thick and gelatinous and is traditionally flavoured with rose water, although the flavours changed over time.

People have been moulding Turkish Delight and other jelly sweets to shapes for years, but it was an American confectionary name William Schrafft starting selling his own bean shaped jelly sweets, or as he called them jelly beans.

Jelly beans grew in popularity over time. They were a popular gift sent to soldiers during the American civil war to help keep up moral. During the 1930 jelly beans became synonymous with easter because of their egg like shape.

Jelly beans really grew in popularity in the 60’s after actor and governor Ronald Reagan declared that jelly beans were his favourite sweet. Since then the humble jelly bean has been steadily growing in popularity and has even made a few TV and film appearances that cemented the tasty little beans as truly iconic sweets.

But the jelly bean worlds was change forever in 1988 when father and son Peter and Richard Cullen founded The Jelly Bean Factory.
